95 original art works by Robert Markle, Canadian, 1936-1990. Markle was of Mohawk ancestry, becoming well-known not only as an artist but also a writer and a musician. Markle was commissioned to provide original art for a Toronto restaurant; the owner was so impressed by his work the name of the restaurant became "Markleangelo's". The restaurant became a favourite of Gordon Lightfoot, Painter's Eleven, Bob Dylan and many others. When the restaurant closed, the Markle art was placed in storage with the intention to make a permanent display in an art museum of this unique and valuable collection (one of the neon installations is on display at the Art Gallery of Ontario). However, after decades of storage the decision has been made, with regret, to offer the collection for public sale.
Please note that 22 works are large plywood installations and shipping is not available for this auction. Gardner Galleries will provide a list of cartage agents available from Windsor to Toronto and will need at least two days notice to move the artwork out of storage.
VIEWING WILL BE AVAILABLE AT 407 HAMILTON RD. by appointment only.
If a bid is placed in the last five minutes, the end time of the auction will be extended to allow further bidding. A buyer's premium of 22% (2% discount if paying by cash or debit within 7 days) and HST will be added to the purchase price.
